Where should an in-text citation be placed?
Answer
In-text citations have two formats: parenthetical and narrative.
In parenthetical citations, both the author and the date, separated by a comma, appear in parenthesis within or at the end of a sentence.
Example:
The primary effect of tricyclic antidepressants in the brain is the inhibition of reuptake of norepinephrine by neurons (Mondimore, 2006).
In narrative citations, the author's surname appears as part of the running text, and the date appears in parentheses immediately after the author's name.
Example:
Mondimore (2006) noted that the primary effect of tricyclic antidepressants in the brain is the inhibition of reuptake of norepinephrine by neurons.
