How do I find a short story or poem?

Answer

  1. Search for a specific short story, poem, or author.
    • When searching for titles or authors, use quotation marks to do an exact phrase search (e.g.,
"The Tell-Tale Heart" or "Emily Dickinson").
  2. Search by the type of short story or poem.
    • Examples: anthology of short stories, poems about nature
  3. Use the advanced search.
    • Search for the title (ti:), author (au:), or subject (su:).
    • Examples:
      • ti:("The Tell-Tale Heart")
      • au:("Emily Dickinson")
      • su:("love poetry")
    • Try subject terms such as:
      • Short stories -- Collections
      • American poetry
      • Fiction -- Short stories
    • Use the filters to narrow down your search results.
      • Publication Year, Content Type, Language, etc.
  4. Look at Contents and Summary information.
    • When you click on a search result it will open the full item record. If it is an anthology look for a Contents or Summary section. These sections will list individual stories or poems included in the anthology.
  5. Start broad and narrow down your search as you go.
